As a Surfacing Technician (Level 1) you will begin your journey in lens manufacturing with hands-on training and supervision. This is an entry-level position designed to build your skills and confidence in a structured, supportive environment. You will be responsible for performing routine and essential tasks that support the smooth operation of our lens production process.

Responsibilities:
Lens Handling & Inspection:
- De-Boxing: Remove semi-finished lenses from packaging, conduct cosmetic inspections, and organise left and right lenses into trays appropriately.
- De-Blocking: Carefully remove surface-treated lenses using semi-automated de-blocking equipment.
- Remove tape, clean lenses with water, dry them with tissue, and separate reusable materials (blocks and alloy) for reclaim.
Production Support:
- Perform routine tasks in assigned areas of the lab with a focus on quality, efficiency, and accuracy.
- Ensure that all work complies with Caledonian Optical’s specifications and production standards.
Documentation and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate written or digital records related to production tasks.
- Adhere to health and safety guidelines at all times, reporting any concerns to leadership.
- Keep your work area clean and organised to maintain a safe and efficient workspace.
Teamwork and Development:
- Work under close supervision while developing skills specific to lens manufacturing.
- May be cross-trained in other departments as needed.
- Complete additional duties as directed by supervisors.
Qualifications and Skills:
- No prior experience necessary—training will be provided.
- Basic understanding of optical frames and lenses is helpful but not required.
- Willingness to learn and work as part of a collaborative team.
- Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
- May be required to pass a vision or colour hue recognition test (especially for roles in tinting).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, repetitive production environment.
