Located in Dyce, Aberdeen, our state-of-the-art facility is at the forefront of ophthalmic technology, providing innovative lens solutions to independent opticians across the UK.

As a Surfacing Technician (Level 1) you will begin your journey in lens manufacturing with hands-on training and supervision. This is an entry-level position designed to build your skills and confidence in a structured, supportive environment. You will be responsible for performing routine and essential tasks that support the smooth operation of our lens production process.

Responsibilities:

Lens Handling & Inspection:

• De-Boxing: Remove semi-finished lenses from packaging, conduct cosmetic inspections, and organise left and right lenses into trays appropriately.
• De-Blocking: Carefully remove surface-treated lenses using semi-automated de-blocking equipment.
• Remove tape, clean lenses with water, dry them with tissue, and separate reusable materials (blocks and alloy) for reclaim.

Production Support:

• Perform routine tasks in assigned areas of the lab with a focus on quality, efficiency, and accuracy.
• Ensure that all work complies with Caledonian Optical’s specifications and production standards.

Documentation and Compliance:

• Maintain accurate written or digital records related to production tasks.
• Adhere to health and safety guidelines at all times, reporting any concerns to leadership.
• Keep your work area clean and organised to maintain a safe and efficient workspace.

Teamwork and Development:

• Work under close supervision while developing skills specific to lens manufacturing.
• May be cross-trained in other departments as needed.
• Complete additional duties as directed by supervisors.

Qualifications and Skills:

• No prior experience necessary—training will be provided.
• Basic understanding of optical frames and lenses is helpful but not required.
• Willingness to learn and work as part of a collaborative team.
• Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
• May be required to pass a vision or colour hue recognition test (especially for roles in tinting).
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, repetitive production environment.
